The former One Direction star was scheduled to perform at Palácio de Los Dress in Mexico City as part of his “Staircase in Sky Tour,” but he withdrew just hours before the show.
Message to Fans
“I am heartbroken to say that I could not perform in Mexico City tonight,” Malik posted on his Instagram Stories. “I have been very ill since this morning, and even though I am trying to push through, my body just doesn’t allow it.”
He continued: “I am truly sorry to let you down. The love and energy I always feel from my fans means the world to me, and it hurts to miss this moment with you. Thank you for your understanding, and please know that I’m sending all my love to each of you.”
A few hours later, he provided a further update: “Mexico, I love you, although many of my team and I suffered from severe food poisoning. This is no joke – I am still fighting it. I’m really sorry.”
Earlier this week, he performed the One Direction song “Night Change” for the first time in 10 years at the same venue.
As he began his set with a song, the crowd sang along while Malik responded to their enthusiasm.
This performance occurred almost a decade since he announced his departure from the boy band, marking the first time he sang a One Direction song in quite some time.
The singer had previously postponed the American leg of his tour after the passing of his One Direction bandmate Liam Payne.
Tribute to Liam Payne
He started his UK tour in Leeds last November, and at the end of the show, he paid tribute to Payne on the screen behind him, displaying the dates of his birth and death with the message: “I love you, bro.” Payne passed away in October of last year after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
