Insights from Yhwh Nailgun
Landing on Cover after the release of their debut album, 45 pounds, the group spoke about their songwriting process. “Sometimes you can find that you are trying to say something without knowing what it is. This isn’t a controlled thing,” Frontman Zach Borzone said. Drummer Sam Picard added, “It feels like chicken and egg. You prescribe certain words, symbols, or something else in the music, but you don’t know what it informs.”
The New York group also expressed their disappointment at being frequently categorized as a throwback to the 70s stage without any innovation. “To me, it seems like low-hanging fruit,” Picard commented. “It’s like: ‘Well, where are you from? What’s vague about your music, and how do you look?’ And then it seems like the nearest match is damn DNA or something similar. This is the logic of AI.”
