Reflecting on his solo journey back in 2020, Berninger stated to NME: “Most of my songs are about self-love or self-defense. They are songs for my soul.” He expressed his desire for his daughter and mother to understand him through his music.
In a September 2023 interview with NME, he explored his writing process and mental health. “I don’t believe in ghosts,” he noted, “but I believe in the power of faith in ghosts. The same goes for God.”
Discussing the difficulties he faced during the pandemic, Berninger remarked: “I emerged from a long period of feeling dry and depressed. The fear of never writing again was terrifying.” He acknowledged how fragile he felt and the emotional and physical paralysis he experienced, stating, “I learned to respect my fragility.”
