Latest Covers and Performances

The first NME Cover Star of 2013 performed “I Am,” a cover based on the poem by John Cooper Clarke. Her performance in the Alt Nation studio elevated the song with a more polished piano and jazz-infused arrangement.

Recently, her sessions followed various performances and covers, including her American television debut on Today’s Show and a rendition of The Cure’s “Close to Me” for an Australian session.

During the SiriusXM set, the singer also showcased a cut version of her emerging hit “Messy” from her 2024 album “It Wasn’t for You Anyway,” along with her new single “Maneceted.”

Review and Insights

Last summer, Young’s debut album received a remarkable five-star review from NME, which described it as “the most distinguishing and bold awareness of its experimental trends.”

“Young’s first full-length album moves with an emotional touch in its production; the eclectic mix of soul stands tall next to raw indie melodies, showcasing the complexities faced by the South London artist. This is a collection that feels equally personal and poignant,” the review states.

“While her unique blend of longing and vulnerability may remind some of SZA, Young possesses genuine star power for furthering an already impressive artistic identity. This record retains unwavering confidence, even in its darkest and deepest moments.”

Around the same time, Young spoke with NME as part of the cover feature and provided insight into her approach to songwriting. “I believe that any artist who isn’t genuine in their lyrics is easily detectable,” she explained.

“I’ve found that the songs are perfect for you when you’ve written them, and they resonate with others, but the meaning often evolves for you over time. The album is sandy, real, and raw. It’s honest, and that’s who I want to be and who I am now.”

To mark her time as a Cover Star, Young also curated a playlist titled “Songs for When I Want to Feel Sexy,” featuring tracks from Doja Cat, Gwen Stefani, Willow, Amarae, and more. Take a look at it here.

In other news, the group Arctic Monkeys celebrated the 19th anniversary of their debut album “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not,” leading to mixed feelings for the Cover Star as she reflects on this milestone.
