Watch Fontaines D.C. Perform Their Debut Song “It’s Amazing to Be Young” Live!

Fontaines DC Performs New Song in Japan

Fontains DC showcased their latest track “It is amazing to be young” in Japan last night (February 22) – check it out below.

Inspiration Behind the Song

The band, which shared the James Ford-produced track earlier this week, incorporated it into their film set at the Toyosu pit in Tokyo.

While speaking with NME, bassist Konor ‘Deego’ Deegan III revealed that this song was inspired by the experience of “in the presence of a newborn child” – specifically the child of guitarist Carlos O’Connell. He mentioned that this song was crafted around the same time as their recent album “Romance” but was kept aside to save for LP “Brief.” “It is amazing to be young” is set for a vinyl release, featuring the b-side “before you just forget” later this year. On the eve of their show, Deego also mentioned that two new songs would be released in a live set soon after they complete “training bends.” We spoke over the phone from Soundchek in Osaka during their Japanese tour, where Deego explained how the country significantly influenced the creation of “Romance”.

“Our first trip to Japan provided immense inspiration for our recordings and left a lasting impression on us. Tokyo felt like a dream. It was a pleasure to perform (“it is amazing to be young”) in the city that inspired us,” he shared.

Alongside the new single, the performance also included many tracks from their latest album, such as the title track, “Here is the Theeth,” and “Starburster.”

Regarding “it is amazing to be young,” Deego added: “I’m thrilled that it finally sees the light of day, as it holds a special meaning for us. Furthermore, it’s a song rooted in the peculiar experience of welcoming a newborn Carlos; it carries a message for her, you know.”

He further expressed: “It was genuinely heartfelt. Like many, we can occasionally become cynical. The world can shape our perspectives that way if we’re not careful. Sometimes, optimism feels like an error, but with the birth of a new child, we’ve encountered a raw and profound beauty and hope that no exhaustion can diminish.”

When asked about the b-side, Deego noted: “This song was written by Kerley (Conor Kerley), and we completed it. I genuinely like this song. It features a fantastic bass line and emotional vocals, but at the same time, there’s an underlying concern for the vocalist because it feels a bit manic. I’d say it’s well thought out.”

Fans eager for more new material may need to wait a bit longer; however, Deego confirmed that the group is already working on their fifth album.

“We can’t seem to stop writing; it’s just what we do when we’re together,” he stated to NME. “We probably need to take a break to give ‘romance’ some time to resonate before we dive into something new. I believe we’ll continue writing and stay connected, and once the tour concludes, we can delve into more serious conceptualization.”
