Watch Ed Sheeran Premiere His Nostalgic New Song “Old Phone” on ‘Fallon’

Ed Shiran’s New Song Debut

Ed Shiran premiered a new song on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in the title role – Check it out below.

Shiran made an appearance in a recent episode of Today’s show, where he discussed his upcoming album, which he has now confirmed after teasing for several weeks. The album will be titled “Play”.

Insights on “Old Phone”

During his segment, Shiran partially revealed a new track called “Old Phone” while playing the acoustic guitar. He shared that the song was inspired by his experience with copyright violation claims in 2016.

He explained to Fallon: “I was in this trial a couple of years ago, and in that trial they ordered you to abandon all your old devices. Consequently, I handed everything over, but I switched to a new pill in 2015, just in an email. I changed my phone since 2015 and left the old one in a box.

He continued to describe the experience as a “meeting with a time machine.” Going through the phone, he found texts from two friends who had passed away, arguments with an ex-girlfriend, and messages from a family member he hadn’t spoken to in a decade: “This really, really expanded me.”

Future Plans and Album Themes

Speaking about “Play,” which still lacks a release date, Shiran mentioned that the direction of this album will influence his upcoming works. While his previous albums were inspired by mathematical symbols like “plus”, “multiplication”, “divided”, “subtract”, and “equal”, his next collection will feature titles such as “Pace”, “Fast Forward”, “Rewind,” and “Stop”.

He also hinted at a posthumous album containing songs written over several decades of his life, intended to be released after his passing, joking that it could be titled “Eckor.” He first mentioned this potential release in 2023, referring to it as “continuous work.”

Earlier this month, Shiran confirmed that work on “Play” is “done” and an official single will be released “soon.” This announcement followed an unexpected performance in the streets of New Orleans, where a brass band accompanied him as he debuted the new song.

Meanwhile, the singer recently revealed that a new song titled “Sapphire” will be released in the coming months. He took to social media to answer a fan who asked what song he should play at his wedding, stating: “Depends on when you get married, because there will soon be quite a few new options.”

Excitement about new music grew when Shiran confirmed that his next album is finished. “It feels like I returned to Big Pop for the first time in a long time,” he said regarding the sound of this LP.

This comes after Shiran mentioned in May last year that he had completed several new tracks but wanted a little more time before sharing them. He told fans: “I released two notes on the tour last year, and that feels like quite a lot when you’re on the road and dropping new music. So, I created some new songs and just need a moment to sit with them.”

The upcoming album will celebrate its first “autumn variations” since 2023, which marked the continuation of the hit “-” (“subtraction”). Rumor has it that this was the final entry in Shiran’s long-term series of mathematical themes.
