Copeland, drummer for The Police, has joined drumming YouTube channel Drumeo for their “First Time” series, which challenges famous drummers to play the drums on a popular song after hearing it for the first time.

Typically, these drummers take a couple of tries before making the final cut: some chart the drums, some jam until they get it right, and some record vocal cues. However, Copeland did none of the above. Instead, he turned on the track almost instantly on his first listen and began playing, barely missing a beat.

Performance of “Rollin”

Below you can check out Stuart Copeland’s interpretation of Limp Bizkit’s “Rollin,” which is very close to drummer John Otto’s original recording.

After the performance, Copeland stated that he had not heard any Limp Bizkit music: “I like the concept of these guys. I’m not very familiar with their music.”

Speaking about his approach to drumming, Copeland shared, “I just make stuff up. I’m just kind of looking for an alternative, something that the track needs. But I’m an asshole, so I guess I won’t do it, I’ll do something else.”

Of working with The Police, Copeland said he “tried really hard to make my band happy.” He continued: “Whenever Sting had an idea, I made sure to listen because he’s actually pretty good at it. I would listen, but then I would forget, and instinct would take over. I did my best and I only want to please. I wasn’t trying to be stubborn; I was just forgetting.”

Limp Bizkit’s Legal Battle

In other news, Limp Bizkit recently found themselves embroiled in a legal battle with Universal Music Group. In October, Durst filed a $200 million fraud lawsuit against UMG, alleging that the music label and publishing company withheld the band’s royalties for years before they investigated and only received payment “recently.”

According to the Limp Bizkit singer, the band “never received any royalties from UMG” until August of this year – despite selling millions of albums and still earning “millions of streams per month on Spotify alone” for years. The suit also alleged that UMG intended to “unfairly retain these profits for itself.”

It has now emerged that UMG is reportedly seeking to have the lawsuit dismissed. Per Rolling Stone, UMG filed the motion Friday (Nov. 22) and claimed in a statement that Durst’s allegations are “based on a misconception.” UMG added: “Plaintiffs’ entire story that UMG was trying to hide royalties is a fabrication.”
