Insights from the Band

In a statement, drummer Andy Williams shared: “This song reminds us of our insignificance and can be helpful when navigating tough times.

“The problem can seem overwhelming, but it’s comforting to realize how small we are within the larger scheme.”

Guitarist Jes Williams added: “I contributed the music, but Jimi (Goodwin, Frontman) truly crafted the lyrics.

“I always knew he had it in him, as he’s always bursting with words. He’s an exceptional lyricist, the real deal. You could see the moment the song inspired him; we all remember it.”

This atmospheric and existential track paints a vast sonic landscape and features an encouraging line: “Flowers under the waves/ will return once.” The chorus includes: “You are the reason/ you – air/ drop in the ocean/ but you are not/ drop in the ocean.

“A Drop in the Ocean” follows the singles “Renegat”, “Cold Dream”, and “Holy Teresa” as part of the anticipated “Constellations for the Lonely.”

The record continues from the Doves’ number one album in 2020, “The Universal Want,” marking their first full-length release in 11 years since “Kingdom of Rust” in 2009.

Currently, the pigeons are performing in the UK without frontman Jimi Goodwin, who is focusing on his mental health. Goodwin was absent during the band’s first UK concerts since 2019 last November.

Discussing “Constellations…” in an interview with NME at the end of 2024, Jes Williams explained: “This is a rather dark album. We began writing it after we canceled the Universal Want tour, so some songs reflect that experience.

“We intended for Renegat to open with an apocalyptic atmosphere, capturing what we felt after such a challenging time. Jimi was with us, yet we were trying to navigate through the chaos – and that fit into the album.”

He added: “We live in a pretty grim world right now, so we wanted to reflect that while offering a glimmer of hope. When you listen to Nila Yang, it feels like it understands you. This is music that can guide you through this dark world. I see it as a future album for the souls of outcasts. We want you to feel understood.”

The musician further mentioned to NME that Goodwin “is still working on his sobriety and mental health,” following the cancellation of all their planned live performances in 2021.

“When we canceled the Universal Want tour, people were really upset after waiting for us since 2010, only for us to cancel,” Williams explained to NME.

“Fans just want to hear the songs. We’ve never performed this album live. Jimi isn’t ready yet, but he’s given us his blessing, so we’re taking the songs on the road.”

The current Doves tour includes a show at the O2 Bush Empire in London. See the full schedule and find remaining tickets here.
