Tracy Capen Declines to Air Music: “Artists Receive Payment Only When You Purchase CDs or Vinyl”

Tracy Capen’s Stance on Music Consumption

Tracy Capen stated that she refuses to broadcast music, insisting that purchasing physical music is the only way to support artists.

Insights from a Recent Interview

The singer-songwriter gave an interview to the New York Times, where she shared her perspective on the current state of the music industry.

When asked how much new music she listens to, she replied: “I am still listening to music. I do not listen as much as before, and perhaps now I’m going to meet someone who will call me a Ludda, but I do not translate the music.”

She elaborated, stating: “I only buy music in physical form. Artists get paid when you genuinely purchase a CD or vinyl. This is important to me.”

“This limits what I listen to because it requires a physical effort to go out and find things, but I still go out,” she added.

She also reflected on her rare public performance at the Grammy Awards in 2024, which she described as “rather cool” for “all young women in all their diversity, making their mark.”

When asked about Chappell Roan, she mentioned: “Yes, and Charlie XCX. This isn’t the music I would create, but I appreciate that we’re at a point where such artists can thrive and even achieve success.”

During last year’s Grammy event, she performed her classic song “Fast Cars” with Luke Combs, a collaboration that brought the song back to the charts in 2023 through the CMA cover. You can view the performance above.

This performance, her first in nine years, led to a remarkable 241 percent increase in streams of the original 1988 track, rising from 248,000 daily streams to 949,000.

The 61-year-old Chapman last released a new album in 2008, titled Our Bright Future, marking her eighth studio entry.
