The tool indicated their intention to spend three months “organizing our ideas” in the studio this spring as they develop their new album.

Tour Details and Future Plans

The group did not release a full-length record with the 2019 monocolates, but, as bassist Justin Chancellor recently mentioned in Summa Inferno, they plan to work on subsequent material following their upcoming Latin American tour.

They will headline their own festival, Instrument in the Sand, for three days in March in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The band is set to perform two sets alongside other artists, including Mastodon, Primus, Coheed and Cambria, Datal Orlov, Cky, and King’s X.

After this, Chancellor mentioned their plan to compile their ideas together, stating, “We all shared our individual ideas with each other, and we have a really good bunch of things.”

“It’s a really challenging process when everyone gathers to make decisions about how it should end. It becomes a bit more mathematical and organized; there’s a board, numbers involved, and decisions to be made. This is a phase we haven’t fully executed yet but need to tackle when we return,” he explained.

“We will spend these months truly organizing our ideas,” he continued. “You have to make these decisions and sometimes push back against each other to reach the next stage. Then comes the recording phase, which is another entirely different endeavor… it’s almost like a pregnancy. Once you enter the studio, you’re making the ultimate decision on how it will sound and how it will be performed, and that will be permanent.”

Possible Formats for New Music

When asked about the potential format of the new music, Chancellor suggested, “We’ve discussed releasing a single, perhaps just one song… We could also opt for an EP. Given our devoted fan base, I believe they would be receptive to that… So, maybe there’s no need to pressure ourselves into creating a full album at once. Instead, we could release a single, followed by another, and then after a year of singles, compile them into an album.”

Last year, Chancellor spoke with NME about the pressure from fans for new music and their hopes for the long-awaited continuation of “Fear Inoculum.”

“The only pressure comes when we announce that we’re working on something new because then we have to make predictions about the release timing, and obviously, it can feel like we’ll disappoint people if it takes too long,” he noted.

“It’s nice that people still want new content, but they should understand that it’s not an easy endeavor. It’s not a straightforward process that unfolds on schedule. Art is a strange beast with its own timeline.”

In other news, the band’s frontman Maynard James Keenan recently shared a personal tribute following the passing of his father, Mike Keenan.
