Tom Morello to Lead as Musical Director for Black Sabbath’s Final Show

Tom Morello’s Musical Direction

Tom Morello discussed how “honor” he feels about becoming the musical director for the final Black Sabbath show this summer.

Final Concert Details

The legendary Heavy Metal group will perform their last concert at Villa Park in their hometown of Birmingham on Saturday, July 5. At this significant show, the iconic lineup will include frontman Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward playing live for the first time since December.

Morello also played a key role in assembling an All-Star lineup for the event, which features artists from Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Lamb of God, Mastodon, Alice in Chains, Halestorm, the recent Grammy winners, Guns N’ Roses, Tool, Jason Momoa, and many others.

“Heavy Metal is a music that made me fall in love with music, and Black Sabbath is the band that invented Heavy Metal,” said Morello during an interview with the Chicago radio station WBEZ. He continued, “So when Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne asked me to be the musical director for Ozzy Osbourne’s Black Sabbath show at the football stadium, which is practically a stone’s throw from where Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler grew up, I had to do it.”

“Right now, we have 14 bands. You know, this is Metallica, this is Slayer. These are all the biggest bands in Heavy Metal history. The show will last about 10 hours, as it will be a celebration of a genre that people around the world love. It was music that truly made me love music. Nowadays, I am interested in many different types of music, but I would never have shown interest if it weren’t for metal.”

When asked if he will perform himself, Morello responded: “Oh, of course, I will be there. This may be a little spoiler alert, but Adam Jones, the guitarist from Tool, and I went to Libertyville High School and played in a band together. Billy Corgan, the lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins, grew up in the same suburbs. We are going to perform together for the first time at the show. So, there will be a connection to 847.”
