The Wombats delve into poor choices in “Can’t Say No” ahead of their sixth album, Oh! Ocean.

Wombats release new single

Wombats have unveiled another track from their sixth studio album 'Oh! Ocean”, featuring the new single “I can't say no.”

Exploring themes in music

The Liverpudlian band’s latest track delves into themes of self-destructive behavior and emotional avoidance. “I think 'Can't Say No' is my favorite on the album. I aimed for it to feel like the three of us were playing together in the same room, if that room was in space,” shares frontman Murph. “The song reflects on making choices that do not aid my future self and may lead to complications later. I’ve never quite learned to live in the “here and now”; instead, I’ve always existed solely “for” the moment, almost as if that moment were my last.”

The album’s title is inspired by a transformative experience at the beach, with Murph reflecting: “I’ve visited many beaches, seas, and coasts over the years, but for some reason, this felt like the first time I truly saw and experienced it. It was a moment of revelation, where I recognized that I had been living inside my head or in a racing helmet with blinders on. It was incredibly powerful. I felt as though I was witnessing everything anew, and I realized how selfishly I had acted, not fully understanding the madness of the world and life.”

Recording and tour dates

The album was recorded in Echo Park, Louisiana, with renowned producer John Congleton, recognized for his work with St Vincent, Wallows, and Death Cab for Cutie. Over six weeks, the band crafted 50 new songs.
