The Weeknd’s Donation for Wildfire Relief
The Weeknd donated $1 million to combat wildfires in Los Angeles.
The artist, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, has teamed up with the World Food Program USA and his humanitarian foundation, XO, to make this donation. The funds will support the LAFD Foundation, the GoFundMe Wildfire Relief Fund, and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, assisting both those impacted by the fires and the firefighters on the front lines.
Album Release Postponement
This announcement comes after his statement on Tuesday (January 14) regarding the delay of his upcoming album, Hurry Up Tomorrow, which is the final installment of his Dawn FM trilogy. The record, originally set for release on January 24, will now debut on January 31.
“This city has always been a deep source of inspiration for me,” the Weeknd remarked when announcing the album delay. “And my thoughts are with everyone affected during this difficult time.”
He also notified fans on social media about the cancellation of his one-night concert at the Rose Bowl in California, initially planned for January 25.
He stated: “Out of respect and concern for the people of Los Angeles County, I am canceling the Rose Bowl concert originally scheduled for January 25th.”
He added: “My focus remains on supporting the recovery of these communities and helping their incredible people rebuild them.”
Last week, five separate wildfires swept through Los Angeles, resulting in extensive damage and the evacuation of over 150,000 residents. As reported by CNN and Associated Press, 24 fatalities have been confirmed, with 16 individuals still missing.
To date, the musician has previewed selections from the album, including his collaboration with Playboi Carti, “Timeless,” co-produced by Pharrell, and another new track titled “Dancing In The Flames,” released in September. He has also hinted at several unreleased songs such as “Wake Me Up,” “Take Me Back To LA,” and “Open Hearts.”
Upon its release, the album will be accompanied by a feature film of the same name starring The Weeknd, Jenna Ortega, and Barry Keoghan. This film is anticipated to serve as a “sequel” to the album and is scheduled for release in May.
The Weeknd recently shared his thoughts on moving away from his stage name. He confirmed that transitioning from the Weeknd identity does not signify retirement, asserting: “Everything should feel like a challenge. And for me now, the Weeknd, whatever it is, has already been mastered.”
“No one will make the Weeknd better than me, and I won’t make him better than he is now. I think I’ve overcome all the challenges in this character, and that’s why I’m really excited about this film because I love the challenge.”
