Details of the Project
Part of the Cross-ARTS program at Barbican, “Frequency: Sounds that form us,” features a new multiplayer virtual reality experience. In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats takes audiences on an electrifying journey back to 1989, where you and your friends must locate an underground acid house party on the outskirts of Coventry.
This music documentary narrates the tales of promoters, police, and eager attendees while showcasing the soundtrack from this transformative period. “In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats celebrates the unifying power of music and dance, illustrating how they bring communities together in times of change,” states Field.
The premiere of the VR documentary occurred in 2022, but this newly updated version will offer an experience for groups of four to enjoy together.

Director Darren Emerson shared with NME about the project’s intent: “The goal was to immerse audiences in the defining moments of nights in 1989 and to educate them about the people involved in organizing, attending, and safeguarding those early unlicensed parties.”
“Most importantly, I want people to have fun using VR and to relive the sense of discovery and escapism that characterized the scene during those early days. If you experienced an acid house, then the night we depict will resonate with your memories. Ultimately, it reflects our universal desire to connect with others, find communal support, and celebrate and dance together.”
