The songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, celebrated as one of the guitarists in British award-winning acts, recently unveiled their first solo endeavor via the debut EP “The Slow Fire of Sleep.” They discussed the inspirations behind the release and the artists who influenced their work.
Creative Inspiration and New Directions
During the conversation, L. Mayland expressed how the singer of the Ebigail Morris group inspired their songwriting and commended her ability to encapsulate personal, vulnerable feelings and experiences through poetry. This approach, L. Mayland explained, resonated well with audiences.
The last party, which garnered fame with their acclaimed debut album “Prelude to Ecstasy,” has earned accolades including the prestigious Mercury Prize, receiving praise from notable figures such as Saint, CMAT, Brian May, and more.
When asked about the group’s readiness to write a follow-up to their major debut album, L. Mayland mentioned that the band members are crafting new material with a fresh perspective.
“I wrote a new song for (my solo) live performances that are a bit more political and darker… Interestingly, the upcoming album with the group is also quite angered by the state of the world,” they elaborated. “We write in direct response to current events, and honesty is always vital.”

When delving deeper into the sound of the second album, L. Mayland added: “It explores darker themes, and we are addressing more intense emotions. These are indeed dark times, and I believe that is reflected in our music, as we engage with the world.”
“However, it’s not all somber; there are some upbeat tracks! There are also humorous and edgy songs. I won’t go into too much detail, but you’ll have to wait and see.”
Last January, NME awarded “Prelude to Ecstasy” a glowing four-star review, commending the band for their “sufficient conviction and magnetism that set them apart from what came before.”
“Some may view the success of the band as a remedy for early pressures about their growth, appearance, and the decision to create music without a ‘serious’ intent in the beginning. But even amidst these challenges, they have produced fantastic songs that are easily accessible and memorable,” it stated. “It’s hard to overlook everything they do right.”
As for L.Mayland, their debut EP was described by NME as “the creation of a bewitching result that speaks to the soul.”
Sharing their inspirations for the release, they stated: “In recent years, I have drawn influence from Laby Siffra and Adrian Lenker, but my long-standing inspirations include Jeff Buckley, Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone, and Etta James. Nick Drake also looms large for me, as I have always been attracted to somewhat melancholic and introspective music.”
“People may have a specific perception of me or my musical interests based on the group, but our ethos has always celebrated five individuals with extensive, diverse tastes. I hope this project highlights that even more.” Check out the full interview here.
