Set to be released on June 27 through Republic Records, this new project marks the singer’s first full-length album in four years. It continues the journey initiated with the “Solar Force” of 2021, showcasing Lorde’s ongoing evolution toward “complete transparency” in her sound. You can pre-order the album now.

Hints of a New Era

The anticipation for this new chapter began last August when Lorde wiped her social media accounts. Fans also noted that her official website was cleared, but it has recently been updated today (April 30) to provide details about the album.

“This album is produced by me and Jim-Stek,” she stated, with contributions from Fabiana Palladino, Andrew Aged, Baddy Ross, Dan Nigro, and Devonté Hynes from Blood Orange. According to Lorde’s website, Virgin was mixed by Spike Stent and Tom Elmhirst, mastered by Chris Gorringer, and is “100% written in the blood.”

Later, she described her inspiration for the album in a heartfelt letter to fans, writing (via Pitchfork): “The color of the album is clear. Like a bath, windows, ice—complete transparency. The wording is simple and unobtrusive. Sounds are consistent where possible. I aimed to reflect myself throughout the process.

“I aimed to create a document that embodies my femininity: raw, primal, innocent, elegant, open, spiritual, and masked. I am both proud and afraid of this album. There’s no hiding anymore. I believe that how we relate ourselves to music is what liberates us.”

The official announcement coincides with the release of the lead single “What It Was” last week, one of the 11 tracks featured on Virgin, which NME describes as a “brotherly song to ‘Green Light’, the lead single from ‘Melodrama’.”

“Even though it doesn’t boast a heavy-hitting anthem, Lorde is dancing again in the dark and in a deeply emotional, electrifying manner. I hope this summer truly belongs to Lorde,” she expressed, continuing to build the excitement that began with her recent performance in NYC at Washington Square (April 23).

Prior to that, she shared a voice note with fans, hinting at a new era after her surprise appearance at Coachella during Charli XCX’s set: “I just wanted to send a greeting because everything is about to change. These are the last moments that are just us before the chaos begins. It feels so right.

“I’m so ready. I didn’t know if I would ever say that, but I am. I am truly grateful for your patience. I felt your love; I felt you right there. It’s going to be wild; you have no idea.”
