Lorde’s New Solo Release
Lorde has made her return with a fresh solo track after a four-year hiatus, unveiling the new single “what it was.”
Reflective Themes and Instrumentation
The latest offering from the New Zealand-born artist features introspective lyrics centered on past relationships, supported by a minimalist arrangement that includes a bass line, subtle percussion, and synth elements. The song delves into themes of nostalgia and personal growth, as Lorde examines long-term relationships through her signature lyrical detail.
Excitement Surrounding the Release
“What it was” follows a series of teasers about new music, including Lorde clearing her social media accounts at the end of last year. The track was first teased on April 16, and Lorde gave fans a sneak preview during an appearance at Washington Square Park in New York.
Prior to the single’s release, Lorde connected with fans via a voice note after joining Charli XCX on stage at Coachella, stating: “I just wanted to say hello, because everything is now about to change. These are really the last moments when it is just us, that madness. I’m so excited. Don’t know.”
This new track continues the artistic journey begun with Lorde’s previous albums “Pure Heroine” (2013), “Melodrama” (2017), and “Solar Power” (2021).
