Today, February 5, the new teaser was shared, following the news in 2023 that the pop star will portray Smurfette in the upcoming blockbuster.

Rihanna’s Role and Music

Before the trailer starts, Rihanna addresses the camera, picturing herself in the role and expressing that she “cannot wait” for audiences to see it in cinemas this summer.

The trailer begins with a remix of the original Smurfs theme song combined with Rihanna’s earlier hit “Don’t Stop the Music,” transitioning into a cover of Rihanna’s pop classic ‘Heaven is a Place on Earth’ by Belinda Carlisle, which also features DJ Khaled.

“In the village of Smurf every day is a party,” Rihanna states in her voiceover. “Each Smurf has a job—for example, pears, influencer, and I am the coolest Smurf in the entire village.”

The trailer suggests a plot centered around a group of Smurfs embarking on a long journey through different dimensions to find the missing Papa Smurf, who is voiced by John Goodman. Additional cast members lending their voices to the film include Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, Nick Kroll, James Corden, and Amy Sedaris.

The film is set to hit cinemas on July 18. Check out the trailer below.

It seems that, aside from her leading role and contributions to the trailer music, Rihanna will also seize this blockbuster opportunity to release her much-anticipated new material.

According to a report from Variety, Rihanna is not only one of the producers of the film but has also written several original songs for it.

More details about the new tracks are expected to be revealed as the film’s release date approaches.

The trailer and prospects for new music come just days after the singer celebrated nine years since the release of her last studio album, “Anti.” Since then, she has released only two separate songs, the latest being “Lift Me Up,” the lead track for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and a tribute to the late actor Chadwick Boseman.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting the new album, often referred to as R9, since 2018 when the singer began dropping hints. These included a lighthearted post featuring a dancing dog with the caption: “I listen to R9 myself and refuse to let go.”

Although expectations were high in 2019, she later told fans to stop asking for new material amid the pandemic. By 2023, Entertainment Tonight reported that Rihanna planned her musical comeback, signing a deal with Live Nation and hoping to embark on a global tour spanning from 2024 to 2025. However, this has yet to materialize.

In December 2023, Rihanna fanned the flames on ET, telling a reporter on the red carpet that new music and a world tour might be on the horizon. Yet, this excitement waned just two months later when her partner A$AP Rocky mentioned that the singer is still “working” on the long-awaited record.

Although Rihanna has kept her cards close to her chest regarding new music, she recently addressed her future in the music industry at a Fenty launch party, explaining that her delay in producing new material was because “God had other plans for me.”

Her upcoming role in the Smurfs movie will not be her first acting venture, as she has previously starred in films such as Battleship, Home, and Ocean’s 8.
