The Edge has indicated that fresh U2 material will be arriving “very soon,” and the band is contemplating some live performances.

The guitarist discussed the band's upcoming music during a recent interview on the Sodajerker on songwriting podcast, confirming that a new single might be released soon.
“There may be a new song coming out that you will hear about very soon. I can't say more. We're in a great place creatively,” he elaborated.
He also mentioned that the band has developed a routine of presenting completed sections to each other during the songwriting process. This approach encourages focusing on material that can be fully developed instead of ideas that would “never work.”
“I kind of fooled myself. I thought, “Okay, this is for The Edge's solo album, so (I) can't leave these things half-finished.” They don't have to be completed texts, but they must cohesively fit together. And that extra discipline, I think, was very beneficial,” he added.
Anticipating New Shows and Music
“I’ve just been working on so much material, and as we start doing some U2 sessions with this content, it seems to be yielding positive results,” The Edge continued. “We can still make many changes, but we won't waste time on concepts that are unlikely to succeed.”
The last new music U2 released was in 2023, with the standalone single “Atomic City.” Prior to that, they shared previously unreleased material recorded in 2004—a track titled “Happiness” that emerged during the sessions for their 2004 album, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.
In a recent interview, The Edge expressed that the band would like to perform more live shows following the conclusion of their extensive “U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere” residency in Las Vegas.
“We hope to play some shows,” he stated. “We had an incredible run in Las Vegas, but we didn't get to see much of the world. We’re eager to connect with our fans where they live instead of them coming to us.”
Exploring New Musical Directions
This isn't the first occasion The Edge has shared insights about upcoming U2 tracks. Back in November, he hinted at the band's next album, indicating it wouldn’t adhere to a “straight up rock” format.
“I believe we're in an exciting phase of experimentation, exploring various musical themes,” he noted. “While the guitar will play a significant role in the next album, I doubt it will be a hard rock record. There will be a unique approach to the guitar beyond traditional rock music.”
Hints about upcoming music from the band also emerged in 2023, shortly after the beginning of their Las Vegas residency, when Bono and The Edge stated they have sufficient ideas for over 100 new songs in a conversation with Zane Lowe on Apple Music.
“Well, I think, new music, new melodies,” said The Edge. “We have plenty prepared, and while some pieces just need a little refinement, it will be ready soon. I assure you, we have some truly exciting new songs.”
Bono added: “The Edge has about 100 in his collection. I have about 20… but (bassist) Adam (Clayton) has a lot to contribute.”
Recently, drummer Larry Mullen Jr. discussed his recovery from an injury that led to a break from the band and outlined what fans might expect from new material: “I don't think it's going to be something we normally do. I hope it will be something different. But I’m very excited to be back in some capacity,” he mentioned, suggesting a possible tour in 2026.
In a separate November interview, The Edge revealed that U2 is currently recording new music with a returning drummer, as well as collaborating with Bono and Brian Eno to create “some crazy sci-fi Irish folk music.”
As for whether this material will feature on U2's next album, The Edge remarked, “We're not certain yet, we'll see,” adding, “Part of our process involves straying significantly from the intended path, and the journey of getting things back on track is what makes the music sound distinctive.”
