The Down System is “testing the waters” with their upcoming stadium show, as they claim the new album “should be incredible.”

Upcoming Tours in North and South America

The Down system sees its upcoming tours in North and South America as an opportunity to “check the water.” Below is what bassist Shavo Odadjian had to say.

Last month, the Down system announced its longest tour dates in recent years, which will take them to South America in April and May, as well as North America in August and September. All dates, which are sold out, will mark the first time since 2017 that the group has been performing regularly, as they have only played one or two shows recently.

Tour Plans and Future Music

Speaking with SiriusXM’s Nation of a Chest with Eddie Tank, Odadjian shared that these tours would serve as a chance for the group to see if they can return to a regular touring schedule: “We haven’t played together in some time. We’ve held one or two shows since 2017. So, the relationship was not as great as now. It was simply not on the same page. We talked. Everything is good, knock on wood. Everyone is happy. Therefore, we decided to check the water and play a few shows. And that’s what it is.”

Odadjian continued: “There is no strategy in this, and there is no plan to perform around the world. I’m not saying it won’t happen; I’m not saying it will happen. We told each other, ‘Let’s play it by ear, do these shows, and see how we feel later.’ If we don’t want to do more, we won’t. If we do want to do more, we will. There’s no heavy responsibility for anyone, because I feel that a lot of this is just overthinking what can happen … So, we decided: ‘Let’s check the water. Let’s not just dive in and start scheduling months. Let’s check the water with three shows. Those three shows turned into six.’”

Future Music Endeavors

Regarding new music, Odadjian explained that nothing is set in stone, as noted in an interview with Blabbermouth: “We will always discuss it here and there, but I don’t know if it will happen or not. If it does, great. But if it happens, it should be something remarkable. It can’t just be a riff. We have something to match, bro. This is a little nerve-wracking, part of this. Twenty years ago, the last thing we did won a Grammy. It should be the biggest it can be. And I’m not saying it can’t be, or we’re not capable – we are.”

He added, “I can’t promise anything. We haven’t discussed it in detail. There’s no pressure. We said, ‘Let’s get together, play these shows, and see how it goes.’ We haven’t done this many shows … Literally, this year we are performing more than in the past seven years combined. So, let’s do it first and see where it leads.”

While the group has not released an album in nearly two decades, they shared two singles, “Protect the Earth” and “Gumanoids Genocide,” in 2020, aimed at raising funds for Artsakh and Armenia after conflicts with Azerbaijan and Turkey.
