This situation arises as the band led by Justin Hawkins released their latest album, Dreams on Toast, last Friday (March 28), marking their eighth studio LP and following 2021’s Motorheart.
The album features singles such as “The Longest Kiss,” “Rock and Roll Party Cowboy,” “Walk around the Fire,” and “I Hate Myself,” along with the closing track “Weekend in Rome,” which features actor Stephen Dorff.
Competition Heating Up
Currently, the group is vying for the top position on the British album charts, eager to surpass the competition posed by Mumford & Sons, who recently unveiled their new LP, Rushmeere.
“I think this will go number one,” stated guitarist Dan Hawkins in an interview with Classic Rock, confidently declaring, “We are up against Mumford & Sons. We will beat them.”
“Rushmeere” follows the release of the band’s 2018 album, Delta, and marks Mumford & Sons’ first LP as a trio, featuring Mumford, Ted Dwane, and Ben Lovett, after banjoist Winston Marshall departed in 2021.
Although both albums were released last Friday, it seems that Marcus Mumford and his bandmates are likely to surpass The Darkness for the top spot on the charts. As of midweek reports, “Rushmeere” is currently positioned at number one and is predicted to maintain that rank until the week’s end.
If it holds on through the weekend, it will mark Mumford & Sons’ third number one album, following 2012’s “Babylon” and 2015’s “Wilder Mind.” If Justin Hawkins and his band take the lead by Friday, it will be celebrated as their best album since their 2003 debut, which held the number one position for four weeks.
