The Cure’s Robert Smith Crafts a Catchy Pop Song Perfect for the Christmas Season.

Robert Smith’s New Christmas Single

The Cure’s Robert Smith has disclosed that he has “written a really catchy pop song” that he may consider for release as a Christmas single.

Insights on New Material

The iconic frontman discussed his new music during an interview with Radio X presenter John Kennedy earlier this week, where he participated in a unique track-by-track replay of the album ‘Songs Of A Lost World’.

As he analyzed the album’s content, Smith shared the sources of inspiration behind the tracklist, reflecting on the early support he received from his brother and his intricate relationship with mortality.

He expressed that his main goal is to evoke an “emotional response” from his audience but also mentioned that he is currently working on new material with a significantly brighter tone.

Describing one of the unreleased tracks, he referred to it as a “really catchy” pop song that could potentially debut during the holiday season. “I always aim for an emotional response in my writing… unless I’m considering, ‘This is a catchy idea,’ but those moments are a bit past me,” he remarked.

“Even though I’ve created a really catchy pop song! I’m finding it difficult to determine how to release it. After being out all day, I was reminded of (Wham!) “Last Christmas” playing repeatedly. I suppose I’ll just have to add some Christmas lyrics to it and let it go!”

While specifics regarding the track and its expected release date are yet to be announced, Smith’s remarks in the interview mark another occasion he has hinted at new music recently.

Earlier this week, reports indicated that the singer revealed plans for two additional Cure albums, one intended as a “companion” to Songs Of A Lost World, and a third taking a different stylistic route.

He clarified his statements during an interview with Absolute Radio’s Danielle Perry as part of Tim Burgess’ Listening Party special, adding that although Songs Of A Lost World is their first album since 2008’s 4:13 Dream, fans shouldn’t expect to wait too long for its sequel.

“There is another album nearly ready for release. It’s designed to be a companion piece. There’s also a third one that’s entirely different. It features random material, akin to late-night studio sessions. Some of it is actually quite good, albeit very different,” he noted.

It has been well known that the band has been diligently working on new material since 2008. In 2020, for instance, Smith mentioned to NME that the band had been focused on “two new albums and an hour of noise.”

Interest in new music is intensifying following The Cure’s recent release of a new EP, A Fragile Thing, which includes a live version and remix by Robert Smith, alongside the announcement of a new live album from their special London performance available today (December 12).

The concert, held at Troxy, showcased the band performing Songs Of A Lost World in its entirety, followed by a jam-packed set of fan favorites and hits, marking what appears to be their final show before embarking on a tour in the fall of 2025.

Looking ahead, Smith once again hinted at a “different” third album, expressing his desire to finish at least one of the records ahead of the 2025 tour.

Songs Of A Lost World achieved The Cure’s first UK number one album in 32 years, with NME awarding it five stars. “Ruthless? Yes, but there’s always enough heart and richness of sound in the darkness to draw you in and elevate these songs among The Cure’s finest,” they remarked.

The album also made it onto NME‘s list of the best albums of the year, with the lead single “Alone” featured in NME‘s best songs of 2024. “Alone breaks a 16-year drought and highlights that The Cure retains their enchantment. With swirling synths, cinematic instrumentation, and Robert Smith’s evocative lyricism, this epic piece demonstrates a masterpiece of ethereal beauty and profound emotional depth. It’s one of their most exhilarating songs to date.”
