Project Insights
The singer, whose real name is Michelle Zauner, wrote the script for the film, based on her 2021 memoir, an expansion of an essay published in New York.
The film was set to feature White Lotus star Sharp and was intended to delve into Zauner’s experiences growing up as a Korean-American, exploring her identity following her mother’s passing.
However, Zauner has now confirmed that progress on the film has stalled. In an interview with Ssense, she stated, “Well, this is a pause. There were issues with Hollywood logistics, and the director stepped away from the project.”
“I spent a year working on a script that was complex, yet valuable. I still believe it will get made someday, but it won’t happen in the near future. Right now, I’m focusing on other creative projects, so the film will have to wait.”

Zauner announced the casting for the role of herself in May 2023, expressing hope that the film would be out in the next couple of years. She mentioned, “I’m just playing a lot of festivals and getting back on the road, and Crying in h mart might come out in the next few years.”
Upcoming Album and Tour
Japanese Breakfast is set to release their fourth studio album, For Melancholy Brunettes (and Sad Women), on March 2 via Dead Oceans (Pre-order here). Earlier this month, Zauner shared the lead single “Orlando in Love” (listen above).
Produced by Grammy winner Blake Mills (Sky Ferreira, Fiona Apple), the record showcases the band’s deeper, more intimate sound, crafted as an “artistic statement: mature, complex, contemplative work that evokes a romantic sense of Gothic novels.”
