Sum 41 Announces Farewell
Sum 41 has officially released a cover of Rage Against the Machine’s “Sleep Now in the Fire” as a tribute to their departure.
Final Album and Tour Details
The Canadian Pop Punk band announced at the close of 2023 that they would be disbanding after the release of one last album and a farewell world tour named the “Installation Tour.” This series of shows concluded earlier this year, featuring 13 performances in their home country. As part of the Spotify Singles series, they recently released their cover of Rage Against the Machine and a new version of “Landmines,” from their 2024 album “Heaven: X: Hell.”
“Recording these singles for Spotify was an incredible way to connect with our fans around the world,” the band stated. “We are incredibly grateful for their support and are thrilled to share this special session with everybody.”

Reflecting on Their Journey
Last summer, guitarist Dave Baksh and bassist Jason “Konu” Makkaslin discussed how the band has grown “stronger” over recent years, especially after health issues faced by Deryck Whibley.
“It took us about two years for Deryck to figure out his health problems, and then, when we returned with ’13 Voices,’ it just felt right,” said Kon during an NME interview. “When everything came together, it was really good. These were American showcases for our entire career, so it was fantastic to play those big festivals.”
When discussing why their last album “Heaven: X: Hell” was the perfect choice for their final LP and why now was the right time to call it quits, Whibley shared: “I feel very good about this album, so I felt it should be the last. We didn’t know we would break up while creating it, but as I reflected on touring with the group, I realized it was becoming clearer.”
He continued: “I’ve had this feeling for a long time, that I want to explore new things, and it just seems like the right time. This album feels like the perfect way to exit. Over the last few years, touring has become increasingly large, and the band has truly excelled. I worry that if I start losing excitement, we will just fade away. I care too much about our fans and what we’ve built as a band.”
This isn’t the first time the band has covered a track; last year they paid tribute to Rage Against the Machine with a powerful rendition of “Sleep Now in the Fire,” recorded at Hellfest 2023.
Sum 41 took to X to respond to Rage Against the Machine’s recent announcement about retiring from live performances. They shared a cover of “The Battle of Los Angeles,” which they performed during their set at Hellfest in June 2023, expressing their admiration for “one of their most beloved bands.”
“In light of Rage Against the Machine’s news of no longer performing live, we wanted to honor one of our favorite groups,” the band shared in their post.
Earlier this year, Whibley and former manager Graig Nori were involved in court claims against each other, with Whibley alleging that Nori subjected him to sexual and verbal abuse. Nori denied the accusations and countered with claims of betrayal of trust, invasion, and unlawful disclosure of private facts.
