Recent Announcements and Activism
The announcement of his headlining performance at Hyde Park follows last year’s unexpected release of “Sing Your Song!” which marked the launch of his 2024 tour. This song represented his first new music in four years.
The track reflects on a nation grappling with discord, misunderstanding, and sadness, with poignant lyrics such as: “Children marching on the boulevard / tears flow through their face / tension in the air so strange / Love disappeared without a trace.”
Wonder’s activism transcends his music; he has been a significant force in the campaign for Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday to be recognized as a federal holiday in the United States during the 1980s. He has also previously been named a Messenger of the United Nations and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014.
In other news, Wonder recently spoke along with John Legend and Shele E at the Democratic National Congress (DNC). Showcasing his support for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, he addressed the crowd before performing his song “Higher Ground,” saying: “We must continue until we become the truly united people of these United States, and then we will reach a higher ground.”
Last year, he also appeared at Rolling Stone’s Sweet Sounds of Summer alongside Lady Gaga, and more recently, he played the harmonica on a cover of Beyoncé’s song.
