Speculations regarding the rapper’s return to cinema began circulating after he hinted last month about working on a project “in the spirit of” Planet of the Apes.

While specifics were initially vague, he mentioned that the project would feature “dogs instead of monkeys.”

Details about the film

Recently, Diversity revealed information about Besson’s new film Last Man, which shares a similar premise and is set to start filming in the new year.

According to the report, Besson will be responsible for writing the screenplay and aims to maintain the same vibe as his 1997 cult classic, Fifth Element, by blending science fiction with comedy.

“I’ve been a huge fan of Snoop Dogg’s music since ‘Who Am I,'” Besson remarked (as per Consequence). “We first met two decades ago and always wished to collaborate again. We just needed the perfect project that would excite us both – and here it is, featuring Snoop. I can’t wait to get going!”

Snoop Dogg reciprocated the sentiment, expressing: “Since watching Professional, I have always wanted (Luc) to create a complete film for me. Now, we finally have the chance to write and produce a Luc Besson movie together.”

Both Snoop and Besson have previously collaborated, with the rapper voicing the character Max in Besson’s 2006 animated fantasy film, Arthur and the Minimoys. Recently, Snoop expressed interest in transitioning to British television, stating his desire to host MasterChef amid the Greg Wallace controversy.

In addition to the new film, Besson is developing a film adaptation of Dracula titled Dracula: A Love Story, while Snoop Dogg has just released his new album “Missionary” on December 13.

In a recent three-star review, NME characterized the album as a “disappointing continuation of a hip-hop classic.”

“It’s been over 30 years since Snoop Dogg dropped the Dr. Dre-produced Doggystyle, the album that introduced G-funk to the world (…) ‘Missionary’ doesn’t follow the path of historical hip-hop classics. Instead, Dre and Snoop aimed to ‘show another level of maturity’ with a motivational yet unrefined album before the close of 2024,” the review noted.

“Missionary” is viewed as a lackluster sequel where the encouraged tone seems forced, and the sonic range undermines the entire project. Dre and Snoop have overlooked the legacy they built for the West Coast with ‘Doggystyle,’ and while there are enjoyable moments, the unforgettable collection barely grazes the surface of their legendary status.”
