Jim Root’s Threat of Release
Slipknot guitarist Jim Root has revealed that he has threatened to unveil the band’s long-awaited “lost” album, Look Outside Your Window.
Background on the Album
This album was recorded by frontman Corey Taylor, Sid Wilson, Jim Root, and Shawn “The Clown” Crahan during the sessions for the band’s 2008 album, All Hope Is Gone. At one point, Taylor attempted to merge the two records into a single project, but the “super experimental, vibrant” tracks did not blend as intended. The bonus track “Til We Die,” from the All Hope Is Gone sessions, frequently plays over the loudspeakers at the conclusion of their shows.
The band first acknowledged the existence of this lost album around the time of 2019’s We Are Not Your Kind, with percussionist Shawn “The Clown” Crahan stating it would be released at the end of that album cycle. However, that did not come to fruition. Frontman Corey Taylor hinted at its release last year, and Crahan confirmed to NME last year that it would “definitely” see the light of day in 2024: “You have my word. The art is ready. It was mixed. It’s mastered. It’s definitely coming out in 2024 and it’s such a great album.”
Currently, it appears that Root is growing impatient as he anticipates its release, telling Metal Hammer that he has repeatedly threatened to disclose this information to the public.
He also mentioned that Crahan is still “tinkering with the mixes for ‘Look Beyond Your Window’,” suggesting, “Maybe he’s losing focus on it or something.”
Recent Updates and Future Plans
“I don’t even remember what this stuff sounds like because we haven’t recorded it for a long time,” he admitted. “I don’t think I’ve listened to it in probably 10 years. Maybe I’ll find it after we finish talking and say, ‘Let’s listen to ‘Look Outside Your Window’ and release it tonight…’
Last month, Crahan gave an update on the project. Speaking to Vulture, the percussionist and central figure of the band stated about the unreleased Slipknot material: “I don’t even know where to start. I mean, there’s audio as well as video. We have a ton of unfinished concepts, some of which are in the final stages. I wish there was a lot of Slipknot in the culture. I’ve created so much in my career, but very, very little is actually being put out there.”
He also discussed the theme of “Look Outside the Window,” adding, “Nobody believes that it even exists or that it will ever come out. I’ve always spoken very highly of it and always said you’ll never hear Corey Taylor sing like that. In my opinion, this is a completely different approach. I recently approved all the art. I also worked very hard on mixing and mastering it.”
The band has been occupied with their 25th anniversary tour this year and has announced multi-region tours for 2025. They recently revealed dates for their 2025 European tour, set to commence next summer. A full list of dates and ticket information can be found here.
The UK leg of Slipknot’s Here Comes The Pain tour, where they will perform their 1999 self-titled debut album in its entirety, kicks off in Leeds tonight (December 14).
