Upcoming Album Details

The track is the second preview of the upcoming studio album by LET All, titled Be the Light, set for release on May 30. This album continues the journey from NO Gods No Masters, which was released in 2021.

Following the politically charged single, “there is no future in optimism,” the latest release sees frontwoman Shirley Manson and the band addressing societal double standards and expressing their outrage at how minorities are still marginalized in contemporary society.

“When I was young, I really did not notice how everything works. People tend to overlook older women, as you begin to see the bigger picture that you didn’t notice when you were younger,” Manson explained regarding the inspiration for the song.

“When you are young, you want to live your life, have adventures, and do what you love, often blinded by societal expectations. It’s not until you grow older that you realize how unfairly the world treats certain groups – not all of us. I’m appalled by how society treats black and brown individuals, the LGBTQ+ community, and women,” she added.

Reflections on Society

“Living in America over the past couple of years, the absolute war with women has been astonishing,” she continued. “All the rights that we thought were secured are now regressing back to the Middle Ages. I can no longer stay silent about this.”

The palpable sense of disappointment resonates throughout the track, as Manson delivers poignant lyrics against a backdrop of 90s-inspired bass and guitars.

“We don’t have time for your fragile ego / we have nothing to justify, I won’t explain anything / we are not interested in people like you,” she sings. “Justice is meaningless; you harbor prejudices / you disdain kindness and call it weakness / you cling to your hatred, while we stand firm, like trees, you will not break us.”

The themes explored in the latest single align with recent comments made by Manson, which sparked controversy regarding an article that referenced “armed” language about her appearance. Last month, she shared a screenshot of a Daily Mail article, which claimed that the rock group looked “unrecognizable” in recent promo photos.

“What does this mean?!? We’ve looked almost the same for 30 years, so I can’t help but think this is aimed at me,” she shared. “Listen – I’m nearly 60 years old. Of course, I won’t look like I did in my late 20s?!?
“Honestly, I think it would be a bit creepy if I did, but hey, that’s just my opinion,” she added. “In any case, this kind of language is weaponized against women like me.”

Reflecting on the upcoming record, Manson noted last year in an interview with NME that Garbage was “searching for fragments of life and humanity” during the writing process.

“In this next entry, I sense a shift,” Manson added. “I am trying to tone down my outrage. As a society, we have become so beaten down and broken. I am striving for something that is a bit more meaningful than just me, because if I don’t…”
