Sheffield Service Faces Legal Setback in Eviction Dispute with Electric Group Lessor

Leadmill Sheffield Faces Eviction

Leadmill Sheffield has lost its eviction court battle against landlord Electric Group, casting uncertainty on the future of the iconic venue that hosts 900 people.

Next Steps for Leadmill

The venue operators, Leadmill LTD, which holds the rights to the name and branding, were notified of the eviction in March 2022. Following a court ruling on February 19, Leadmill released a statement about their upcoming actions.

“While this is a challenging and frustrating time for our venue, we want to reassure our supporters, artists, and the broader community that there is no immediate indication of what will happen next,” the statement reads. “Leadmill is not just bricks and mortar; it is a home. Many of our team members grew up here, have worked here for over 15 years, and have dedicated their lives to creating incredible events and experiences.”

Future Plans for Leadmill

The event venue, established in 1980, has stated that they are “actively consulting” with legal advisors and will “remain committed to exploring every possible legal avenue to secure our future, protect our staff, and preserve our venue.”

Electric Group, which acquired the property’s freehold in 2017, intends to continue operating the venue as a music space. However, Dominic Madden confirmed in his witness statement that if the eviction goes ahead, the venue will no longer operate under the Leadmill name, and the current staff will be replaced.

The planned programming will remain unchanged unless stated otherwise, as the venue’s leadership urges supporters to “continue standing with us” as they navigate the next stage of this challenge.

This situation follows a recent denial of the Leadmill’s planning application to demolish parts of the venue in the event of eviction. A planning officer described the proposed demolition as “pointless” and lacking public benefit.
