The punk legends have not toured in the United States since 2003 and have not performed there since 2008. However, Jones mentioned to NME that they are planning new dates, reflecting on the group’s time in the country back in 1978.
New Album Releases and Performances
Earlier this month, it was revealed that they are set to release three albums titled “Live in USA 1978”, following manager Malcolm McLaren’s bookings at relatively obscure venues that were ultimately filled with a rather hostile crowd. Frontman Johnny Rotten, born John Lydon, departed from the group shortly after their show in San Francisco on January 14, when they had not reformed since 1996.
When asked by NME‘s Jordan Bassett if the band could return to the USA, Jones responded, “We!”
After Bassett pointed out that the news had not yet been officially announced, Jones replied, “Yes, but no one knows where we are playing.”
He, however, refrained from providing further details, explaining: “I do not want to put my leg in it! I’m excited. I know the dates, so I know that it will be good … “
The group reformed last year with Frank Carter from Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes as the lead vocalist instead of Lydon, and they played a series of shows, including an autumn tour. In November, they were announced as part of the 2025 lineup, and earlier this month, an Australian tour was revealed. Today (January 27), they also announced a performance at the Royal Albert Hall for Teenage Cancer Trust.
Working with Carter, Jones stated: “Frank was the first singer that we tried out because I, Paul Cook (the drummer), and Glen Matlock (the bassist) wanted to play. It just worked right away. He is much younger than us, he’s 40, so he has all this energy, and we, old farts, can just hang back! It was so much fun, and people liked it, and I enjoyed seeing people who loved it.”
“I was ready to leave him, tour, and all that. I don’t care. But with Frank, it just happened effortlessly. We all get along. There’s no agro. It’s just fun!”
Meanwhile, Lydon is not involved in this current reunion of the Sex Pistols, instead preparing for a UK tour with his band Public Image LTD (PiL) later this year. The last time the group toured was in 2023 following the release of their last album, “End of World” in August.
He mentioned that he thought the group might not tour together again after the sudden death of his friend and lifelong manager, Stevens, in December 2023, while his wife Nora also passed away at the beginning of the same year.
