“I Said That I Love You First” will chronicle the couple’s love journey — they’ve collaborated on several of her hit songs, starting with “Same Old Love” in 2015. The couple confirmed their romantic relationship in December 2023, with Gomez stating that she had been dating the producer for about six months. They announced their engagement in December 2024.
Gomez, who has often been asked about her return to music while denying any plans, wrote on Instagram: “I always deceive you guys with my new album, I said that I love you first with my best friend @itsbennyblanco, out on 3/21.”
More recently, she shared with fellow actress Saoirse Ronan that although she feels she’s “too old for the pop star life,” music will always be a part of her life since her partner is a musician and she enjoys having it for entertainment.
She added: “I definitely believe my strong suit is probably acting. But one thing I am proud of in music is storytelling — my favorite songs are primarily ballads, and they are very transparent and honest. I think I might be too old for the pop star life. I am genuinely happy to be in this new era of my life, as this is, in many respects, just the beginning.”
Previously, she mentioned that her music career “doesn’t end,” but she would like to focus on acting, as she enjoys the opportunity to express herself through music.
In a recent interview with NME, Gomez discussed her promotional efforts for her latest film Emilia Perez and was asked about new music alongside Zoe Saldana. Since her last album “Rare” released in 2020, Gomez stated: “Well, if I had one, I would love to talk about it. I think it’s quite enjoyable to focus on this aspect of the entertainment field. Let’s see, you never know.” – read the complete conversation with Gomez and Saldana in NME.
In a three-star review of Emilia Perez, Sofia Butcher wrote for NME: “You probably have never seen a film like Emilia Perez before – and so far in the speeches enough meat so that you are a little glad that you have done it, you probably do not want again.”
Emilia Perez has received a record 13 nominations for this year’s ceremony, including best film, best supporting actress for Saldana, and best actress for Karl Sofia Gascon, the first openly transgender person nominated in that category.
