Sammy Hagar On Jealousy
Sammy Hagar contemplated the reason behind Alex van Halen’s silence towards him for 21 years. In 2022, Hagar expressed that the drummer fully cut it off, adding that “Alex is still with me something shocking.” It is significant to mention that Van Halen omitted details about Hagar from recent memoirs, Brothers, which end their narrative before the introduction of vocalist David Lee Roth.
Continuing Hostility
Recently, Hagar discussed their ongoing feud with Katya Stone. “I dreamed of Alex the other day, dude. It was madness. And it was so damn real,” he recalled. “I said, ‘What have you angry me about, dude? What the hell? Now just tell me what your problem is. What did I do? Just tell me.’” The interviewer speculated whether this disconnect related to Hagar’s detailed account of the “worst period of Eddie’s life” in his 2011 memoir, Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock, but Hagar dismissed this notion.
“I don’t think it’s all that,” he stated. “I had this conversation with several people, including (former Van Halen manager) Irving Azoff. I asked him, ‘What is the problem?’ Some people said, ‘Oh, Cabo—wabo.’” Hagar responded, “How the hell could they be angry about that? They gave me this damn thing, they went out at me, left me with this. They pressured me to compensate them in case a lawsuit came from my actions.”
Speculations on Inactivity
Later, Hagar pondered whether Van Halen’s relative inactivity in music contributed to the tension, while he continues to tour. “I think that Al is angry because I am doing this, and (bassist) Mike (Anthony) and I are still active, and he cannot,” Hagar suggested. “He is not a singer. He is not a guitarist. He is truly not the leader of the group. It seems he doesn’t want to play drums or can no longer do so, and he cannot write a new album. Alex wasn’t the songwriter; Eddie and I were the ones who created songs.”
He further stated, “I think it really bothers him that Mike and I are still doing this.” When the interviewer raised concerns about Van Halen’s health affecting their relationship, Hagar replied, “Yes, I would say so. And I’m fine.” Recently, Hagar released a new single titled “Thanks, Goodnight,” which features a guitar that the late Eddie Van Halen revealed to him in a dream.
