Momentous Win for Newcastle United
The moment occurred when the singer’s home team secured its first home trophy in 70 years last night (March 16) after defeating Liverpool with a score of 2:1 in the Karabao Cup. Thousands of fans flocked to Wembley to witness the club claim its first European Cup since 1969, and the first home trophy following the 1955 FA Cup victory.
Among those celebrating was Sam Fender, who took to the stage in Berlin shortly after Newcastle United’s triumph. Acknowledging this historic event, the singer altered aspects of his live show, which is tied to the release of his album “People Watch,” to pay tribute to his beloved club. This included a performance of the NUFC anthem, Mark Knopfler’s “Going Home: The Theme of the Local Hero.”
Additionally, he modified the lyrics of his song “A Little Closer,” changing the line “I never found him” to “his name is Dan Burn,” referencing the player who scored to put Newcastle United ahead in the Karabao Cup final with a header in the 45th minute.

He later shared a selfie in a t-shirt surrounded by Newcastle United scarves, followed by another selfie after the win. “Best day ever. We deserve this. 70 years. The clock has struck. This victory comes after the singer-songwriter partnered with Newcastle United earlier in the year for an auction of Karabao Cup shirts, with proceeds going to charity. Last night was not the only highlight for the ongoing tour; earlier this month, the guitarist made headlines after eating a Greggs sausage roll on stage, thanks to a fan who brought it from the UK to his Paris show.
Alongside his live events, he recently celebrated a significant milestone as “People Watch” achieved the largest opening week for a British artist since Harry Styles’ “Harry’s House.” It also marked the highest sales for Fender, surpassing his debut “Hypersonic Missiles” from 2019 and “Seventeen Going Under” from 2021.
NME gave a four-star review of the album, stating: “Reflective, analytical, and vulnerable, ‘People Watch’ does exactly what the title suggests: it reflects on the experiences of characters, friends, and family who shaped him. He approaches each track with sensitivity as he looks back at his life—perhaps even with a hint of guilt—and contemplates who he can be in the future.”
As for new music, Fender recently hinted at another upcoming album, expressing that he “desperately needs” to embrace a more inspired punk sound in the future, while using his speech to celebrate the supporters of Newcastle.
