Daltry’s Advocacy and Statement

The rock legend has overseen the annual Trust concert series for 24 years before stepping back in 2024, and now he has announced his support for the #andyoungpeople campaign.

The charitable organization is urging the UK government to ensure that adolescents and young people with cancer are specifically considered in the forthcoming national cancer plan for England, as well as in the plans of associated countries. Learn more about the campaign here.

Reflecting on his support, Daltrey remarked: “When I reflect on my life from ages 13 to 26, those years had the greatest influence on my future. Young people are our future; imagine being 18 years old and learning you have cancer in just a few months—or even years!”

“The solution may not be straightforward, and perhaps there isn’t just one answer. Think about this: they deserve to receive diagnostic tests at the earliest opportunity! This could involve training general practitioners to identify early symptoms and understand that cancer can affect this age group.”

“Quick referrals to specialized consultants are crucial for this group, as the types of cancer they may face can be rare, extremely aggressive, and challenging to treat,” he continued. “Time is of the essence. They should also benefit from potentially lifesaving clinical trials and receive mental health support necessary to navigate the devastating impact of cancer on their lives.”

“Currently, many young individuals are missing out on the help they need, which is why I support the Teenage Cancer Trust. I urge you to show your support for adolescents and young people with cancer by backing the #andyoungpeople campaign.”

Daltrey remains a patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust, while Robert Smith from The Cure has taken on the role of curator for their concerts starting from 2026.

“Thanks to the long-awaited and remarkable support from The Cure, Robert values the vital work of this charity for young cancer patients,” Daltrey said about his successor. “The concerts have become a staple in the musical calendar, featuring some of the greatest artists in the world. Finding a suitable person to take over was challenging, but Robert, a true musical great, is the perfect curator for the 2026 concerts.”

In other news, Daltrey recently shared with the audience that he had been told he would “go blind.” Referring to the titular character of the 1969 rock opera, he added: “Thank God, I still have my voice. If I lose it, I will embrace the full Tommy.”
