Expanding the Definition of Rock and Roll

In recent years, discussions have emerged about whether the Hall should continue using the “Rock 'n' Roll” moniker, especially after welcoming a variety of artists from genres beyond traditional rock music, including Eminem, A Tribe Called Quest, Mary J. Blige, Dolly Parton, and Missy Elliott.

Chairman John Sykes recently spoke to Vulture, revealing that he has no intention of changing the name, stating that he would prefer to “message that rock 'n' roll is open to everyone.”

“I think it’s because some people don't understand the meaning of rock 'n' roll,” Sykes explained. “If you go back to the original sound of the 50s, it was all there. As Missy Elliott calls it, it was gumbo. It simply became known as rock and roll. So when I hear people say, ‘You should just change it to the Music Hall of Fame,’ rock and roll pretty much covers all that territory.”

“Instead of discarding the name, it serves better to communicate to people the origins of rock 'n' roll and its true essence. Once they hear it, they will understand.”

A Broader Perspective on Eligibility

Sykes recounted Jay-Z’s initial hesitance regarding his 2021 appointment, with Jay-Z saying, “Rock is dead. It should be called the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame.” Sykes responded, “Well, hip-hop is rock 'n' roll.” He emphasized the need for better explanation, referencing artists like Little Richard, Otis Redding, and Chuck Berry as foundational figures of rock and roll, whose influence can be seen in hip-hop.

Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine echoed similar sentiments about the Rock Hall. “People mistakenly believe the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should only celebrate rock bands,” he noted. “Public Enemy embodies more rock and roll spirit than 95 percent of all the hair metal bands.”

Morello further elaborated that the criteria for entry should encompass a broader definition, stating, “This music has a spirit, a spirit of youth. I think rock and roll should have a very, very broad meaning. There’s room for diverse genres here.”

Last year’s inductees included Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Kool & The Gang, Peter Frampton, Foreigner, and Dave Matthews Band, alongside Blige and A Tribe Called Quest.
