Youth Music Issues Warning
Youth music has cautioned that young individuals across the UK may face a loss of access to large-scale music projects in the upcoming decade, prompting the initiation of a new campaign aimed at preventing their closure.
Risks to Music Projects
A charitable organization that aids young people engaged in music within marginalized communities indicates that 41 percent of large music projects are currently at risk of closure, which is a 17 percent increase from the previous year.
Additionally, their research reveals that 54 percent of the organization’s partners have specific expectations from young people looking to access musical projects, and the current funding enables support for only one out of five applicants. Consequently, over 260,000 young individuals are left without access to musical opportunities.
Campaign for the Future
In response to this situation, youth music has launched the “Salvation of the Roots” campaign, pledging to match every pound donated up to £1 million. These funds will be allocated to youth organizations and young creators in need of financial assistance.
The campaign’s launch features a documentary starring Jordan Stevens of Rizzle Kicks, who has even gotten a tattoo to raise awareness for the cause.
“The music scene in the UK is in serious trouble. Mass music projects are essential spaces for young people to build community, refine their passions, and discover purpose, yet they are shutting down at an alarming rate. I would not be where I am today without the support of organizations like youth music and the large music projects they fund,” says Stevens.
“This is why I am proud to support the ‘Salvation of the Roots’ campaign, and why I am making my support permanent with this new tattoo. Salvation of the Roots is not just a slogan; it is a rallying cry and a plea for support. Fundraising is the most crucial step we can take to protect the next generation of musical talent. If we fail to do so, there will be no new artists, no innovative sounds, and no future for British music. Please help us save the roots before it’s too late.”
