Astley’s cover comes after Roan performed a duet with Elton John at the Oscars.
Before Roan’s performance, John praised her in a speech about how he felt when he first heard her work. “I was just captivated the moment I heard her. I interviewed her and fell in love with her and her album,” he stated. “She’s so talented and is now one of the biggest stars in the world. She not only sings beautifully on stage but also speaks from the heart.”
Additionally, during the Elton John event, Roan took the stage for an entire set, featuring more duets with John on “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” and “Your Song.” She also revisited these songs on YouTube five years ago before rising to fame. Roan performed “Naked in Manhattan,” “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl,” “Femininomenon,” “Hot to Go,” and “Good Luck, Baby!”
The night before her performance, Roan used her platform to dedicate her British award to “trans artists, drag queens, students, sex workers, and Sinéad O’Connor,” making headlines after her impactful performance as the Best New Artist at the 67th Grammy Awards and sharing her experiences as a new artist.
