Research Highlights: Rising Costs and Safety Concerns Lead to Fewer Outings Among Young People in Great Britain

Youth Nightlife Participation Declines

Young people in the UK are going out less frequently than last year, according to recent studies from the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA).

Financial and Safety Concerns Impact Night Out Choices

A study conducted on behalf of the NTIA surveyed 2,001 residents of Great Britain aged 18-30. The findings indicate that 61 percent of participants have reduced their nightlife activities compared to the previous year, with only 16 percent admitting they go out after 10 PM.

Financial pressures emerged as a significant factor, with 68 percent stating that the current economic climate has affected their willingness to attend night events. Additionally, 53 percent reported spending less on nights out compared to 12 months ago.

Safety concerns also influence behavior, as over a third of respondents express feelings of fear or anxiety when going out at night. Transportation availability is another obstacle, with nearly 70 percent indicating that better night transport options would encourage them to stay out later.

The study highlighted a lack of faith in government responses, with more than 50 percent expressing doubt that the government would address their concerns. This skepticism rises to 89 percent among those with safety issues.

“The results of this study confirm what we have been warning in the industry for years – people are hesitant to engage in nightlife, and safety issues are keeping them at home,” says Michael Kill, CEO of The Night Time Industries Association. “The night economy in Great Britain is a vital cultural and economic force, but we see a generational divide due to systemic issues that require attention. If we do not take action now to enhance safety and transport infrastructure, we risk further decline in this sector and the social and economic benefits it provides.”

In response, the NTIA has called for infrastructure improvements, including enhanced street lighting, safer transport options, extended public transport hours, reduced night travel costs, and increased safety presence on the streets at night.
