Her Musical Journey
Stone was nominated for three Grammy Awards during her long and successful career, collaborating with prominent artists like D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, and Alicia Keys.
Born in Columbia, South Carolina, on December 18, 1961, Stone began her musical journey with the hip-hop group The Sequence, the first all-female rap group to sign with Sugar Hill Records. They achieved hits with tracks like “Monster Jam” and “Funk You Up,” the latter of which was famously sampled by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars in “Uptown Funk.”
Following the group’s disbandment, she continued her career as a songwriter and backing vocalist for various artists, notably contributing to D’Angelo’s neo-soul classics ‘Brown Sugar’ and ‘Voodoo.’
Her solo career took off in the late 1990s with the release of her debut album “Black Diamond” in 1999. Hit singles such as “I Wish I Didn’t Miss You,” “Brothha,” and “No More Rain (In This Cloud)” topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA, along with “U Make My Sun Shine,” a duet with Prince in 2001.
Her subsequent albums, “Stone Love” (2004) and “The Art of Love & War” (2007), showcased her continued success, with her latest record, “Let The Language,” released in 2023.
In addition to her music career, Stone made a mark in acting, appearing in films like Hot Chick and Combat Temptations. She also participated in reality shows like Celebrity Fit Club and R&B Divas: Atlanta.
Stone is survived by her daughter Diamond and her son Michael.
