Rapper TEN and the murder of Jimmy Mizen
Rapper TEN is known for his involvement in the murder of schoolboy Jimmy Mizen.
The artist, whose real name is Jake Fakhri, was convicted of murdering a 16-year-old in South London in 2008 and subsequently sentenced to life in prison.
Mizen’s tragic death resulted from a dispute that erupted at a bakery in south-east London. At just 19 years old, Fakhri hurled a Pyrex dish at Mizen, causing a severed artery that led to the young boy’s death.
Fakhri maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty to murder; however, he was found guilty at the Old Bailey in March 2009 and sentenced to life with a minimum term of 14 years.
He was released from his license in June 2023 and subsequently embarked on a music career under the moniker TEN, gaining recognition on DJ Theo Johnson’s BBC 1Xtra radio show.
Controversial music themes
According to reports by BBC and The Sun, the rapper’s music frequently incorporates violent themes, with some of his unfiltered lyrics seemingly referencing Mizen’s murder.
“Put it on a man and watched him melt like Ben and Jerry/Sharpen your blade, I gotta keep everything I need/Be alert and keep it ready, any angle could be deadly/The judge looked at me before the trial even started, he already knows that he will throw a book at me,” I read from one of his tracks.
Another lyric includes: “Seeing a person’s soul fly out of their eyes and take their breath away. I wanted more, it made it feel less wrong. Seeing blood spilled on the same floor where he was left.“
In response to the controversial content, a spokesperson for HM Prison and Probation Service stated, “We are aware of this content and are investigating it as a priority. We take any content that may glorify or cause harm to victims of violence extremely seriously.”
Margaret Mizen, the victim’s mother, expressed her shock upon learning of the songs. “We’re a little shocked, we’re just taking it in. How can you let someone play this kind of music? The words are just terrifying,” she commented.
“I think he’s a coward. The fact that he can play his music in a balaclava and not show his face tells me he’s a bit of a coward. I don’t want him to become some kind of celebrity just because he was mentioned in the news,” she added.
Regarding the songs aired on 1Xtra, the BBC stated: “Decisions about music are made on a case-by-case basis. We have strict editorial guidelines before broadcasting or publishing any content. BBC 1Xtra does not glorify violence.” It is important to note that none of the tracks specifically referencing the murder were broadcast.
After the loss of their son, Mr. and Mrs. Mizen established the Jimmy Mizen Foundation, which aims to assist and support young people in London escaping violence. In 2013, Margaret Mizen received an MBE for her efforts in promoting peace.
