New Album Announcement

Jarvis Cocker and Ko excited fans who have been eagerly awaiting new material since signing a record deal with Rough Trade last year. They reunited in 2023 for their first performance since 2012, showcasing new tracks including “Farmer,” “Spike Island,” “My Sex,” “You Should Have Loved,” “Background Noise,” and “Sonset.”

Earlier this week, the iconic Sheffield group announced “More”—their first album in nearly 24 years—which will be released on Friday, June 6. The album was recorded and mixed at the ORBB studio and produced by James Ford. It is particularly special as it is their first since the passing of bassist Steve Mackey, who died in 2023, and is dedicated to him.

In the lead-up to their Spike Island performance, Cocker sat down with Ross to discuss the new album, recent weddings, and his unique fashion sense. He humorously revealed, “I proposed during a traffic jam in Mexico. I hesitated for a while, but then I thought, ‘I will do it now.’ When the muse speaks to you, you must respond.”

Regarding his eclectic style, Cocker mentioned that when he started buying clothes for himself, he began “experimenting” with pieces from Jumble Sales. “This sometimes failed, but I was always willing to try something new. If people laughed, I thought, ‘I won’t wear that again.’ I learned and evolved through that experience.”

On Pulp’s new music, he stated, “We just decided to see how many songs we could write, and eventually ended up with a record.” Their latest single, “Spike Island,” continues Cocker’s exploration of the legendary concert at Spike Island, which The Stone Roses performed in Cheshire in May 1990—considered one of the most iconic shows of all time and a precursor to the Britpop era.

Pulp previously referenced the Spike Island show in their track “Sorted for E& Wizz,” featured on their 1995 album “Different Class.” In a conversation with 6 Music, Cocker admitted, “I never attended the concert, but I talked to people who did and collected their impressions to capture the atmosphere and essence of that day.”

Speaking with NME last year about the new material, guitarist Mark Webber stated, “We are older now, so it’s a bit more mature, but that makes it sound boring! It’s a mix between mature and bubbly pop music.”

The seventh and final studio album from Pulp, “We Love Life,” was released back in 2001 through Island Records. They later released “After You”—their first single in over a decade—through Rough Trade in 2012 as part of their first reunion, produced by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy.

The group has already announced a number of live dates for 2025, including a significant return concert at Tramlines 2025 in Sheffield, a headlining spot at Bilbao BKK in Spain, and a full UK arena tour in 2025. Visit here for tickets and more information.
