Triple j shared the full performance of Fontaines DC for its As a version series, where musicians cover songs of other artists while incorporating their unique styles. This time, Fontaines DC visited the Triple J Studio during their recent tour in Australia.
To select their cover, Grian Chaten and the band opted for Bring Me The Horizon’s hit song “Can You Feel My Heart,” reimagining it with a blend of guitars and strings that offered a dreamy, rich sound. Their performance also pays homage to Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box,” with frontman Grian Chaten delivering the opening verse and chorus to conclude the cover.

When discussing their choice to cover “Can You Feel My Heart,” Conor Kerley from the band elaborated: “It was Grian’s idea. Initially, I think the sound of this song, with its electronic elements, truly reflects the themes we explored in our last album, which made it a promising starting point.”
On the significance of “Heart-Shaped Box,” Kerley shared that Nirvana’s song “was probably one of the first tracks I learned to play on guitar in Drop D tuning.” They almost transformed “Can You Feel My Heart” into a “Heart-Shaped Box” cover, preparing for Triple j Productivity: “Grian just began it when we were working on sounds, and it became a moment of ‘Should we switch to this?’ Ultimately, we incorporated elements of “Heart-Shaped Box” into our cover.”
Another song Fontaines DC considered for As a version was “Crocodiles’ Groove in the Heart/California Girls,” but they ultimately decided against it.

Regarding new material, Fontaines DC recently released the new single “It Is Amazing to Be Young,” which bassist Conor Digan III revealed to NME was inspired by “the presence of a newborn child” – the child of guitarist O’Connell.
He also noted that the song was written around the same time as “Romance,” but was saved for the album “Briefly.” “It Is Amazing to Be Young” will be released on vinyl with a B-side titled “Before You Forget” later this year. Visit here to make a pre-order.
