As stated by the Academy, this award honors those who have “made significant contributions beyond performance to the field of recording.” Additionally, the Tech Grammy will be awarded posthumously to the late acoustic engineer Dr. Leo Beranek, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 102.

Among the honorees, Prince, who died in 2016 at age 57, Joe Strummer of The Clash, who passed in 2002 at age 50, and Frankie Beverly, who died this September at age 77, will receive their lifetime achievement awards posthumously.

“Each of this year’s Special Achievement Award recipients has left an indelible mark on music, from paving the way for others to innovations that forever changed the trajectory of the music landscape. We can’t wait to celebrate this group and their achievements in February.”

This past August, Prince was honored with an induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, a recognition his sister Sharon Nelson stated was “the award he wanted more than any other in his life.”

In the meantime, Frankie Valli made headlines recently after fans expressed concern over viral videos showing the 90-year-old singer at recent concerts. He responded, saying that “no one has ever forced me to do anything I didn’t want to do.”
