Primus Announces New Drummer
Primus has revealed the identity of its new drummer following a global open call for auditions.
Departure of Tim Alexander
In October, the band shared the “full shock” of their longtime drummer Tim Alexander’s departure via social media. They stated: “Currently, we accept applications from all points in the universe for the position of drummer Primus/percussionist.”
The results of this search have concluded, with John Hoffman, a drummer from Shreveport, Louisiana, emerging as the successful candidate. He boasts a significant following on YouTube.
Les Claypool confirmed the news on Instagram, writing: “Huffington!!! Welcome on board!”
John Hoffman’s Reaction
In his own post about the news, Hoffman expressed: “Good luck is when preparation meets opportunity. I came and did my job as I usually do. It went as well as I could hope. Meinard James Kinan sat right in front of me and watched all my playing. He gave me this towel. It was one of the most incredible days of my life. I love you all. We did it.”
Hoffman’s Introduction and Primus’s Expectations
During Primus’s auditions, the band articulated their expectations from any new member. They expressed, “We are in search of a well-rounded, open-minded individual with unique sensitivity and artistic vision, eager to explore new paths in creativity.” They emphasized the need for exceptional skill, but also highlighted the importance of musical intuition and collaboration.
By the end of 2024, the band humorously noted that they may have “found our guy” in the form of Bigrass legend Billy Strings, while also cautioning against “tricksters and frauds” during the audition process.
A few months later, Alexander provided insight into his decision to leave the band. He shared, “Over time, I began to realize that this was affecting my physical, mental, and family life, and my heart simply wasn’t in it.”
He reflected, “I had to step back and evaluate what I was doing. I had always thought of myself as just a drummer dedicated to music, unaware of how everything was affecting me.”
Primus is set to perform at the Instrument Festival in the Dominican Republic in March, where Danny Carey will join them on drums. Hoffman’s debut with the band will happen on the upcoming tour later this year, featuring performances alongside Puscifer and A Perfect Circle.
