Pink Floyd is regarded as one of the most impactful bands in history, known for their experimental style and iconic albums such as “The Dark Side of the Moon” and “The Wall.” The film Pink Floyd: Live At Pompeii is recognized as a pivotal piece in music history, showcasing the band during their rise to global fame and emphasizing the unique circumstances of the performance.
The setting is an ancient Roman amphitheater in Pompeii, Italy. During this time in their career, the band performed a typical set without an audience, save for the film crew. They utilized standard touring equipment, including a mobile 8-track recorder.
This film has greatly influenced numerous music videos and performances, with artists like Beastie Boys, Korn, and Radiohead expressing their admiration for it. In 2016, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd returned to the amphitheater to perform two concerts before a live audience.
The press release states: “Pink Floyd in Pompeii was initially released alongside ‘The Dark Side of the Moon.’ This film documents Pink Floyd during the period before they became giants on album charts across the Atlantic—where their music continues to thrive today.”
“Set in the beautiful ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheater in Pompeii, this unique and thrilling film captures Pink Floyd in an intimate concert without an audience.”

The film has been restored from the original 35mm negatives that were recently discovered. It will also be accompanied by a live album from the performance.
“Since 1994, I have been searching for the elusive film Pink Floyd in Pompeii. Thus, the recent discovery of the original 35mm negative from 1972 was a monumental moment,” said Lana Topham, Pink Floyd’s restoration director. “The newly restored version offers the first complete 90-minute cut, merging the 60-minute edit with additional documentary segments shot at Abbey Road Studios.”
It has also been recently announced that a film about the late band founder, Syd Barrett, is in production, titled Full Unknown.
