A Glimpse into “Saint Teresa”
The song kicks off with an air guitar segment as Jima Goodwin sings: “Her fingers are in Avila / Her jaw in Rome / Saint Teresa / with your body in different places / you are really without a home.” This lyric reflects the history of Teresa of Avila, a 16th-century nun and reformer, whose burial and canonization process resulted in parts of her body being sent to multiple locations, including Rome, Paris, and Lisbon.
This narrative inspired the British rockers to craft a track that is both sensitively impactful and enshrouded in mystery. Discussing the song in a press release, Goodwin remarked: “By holding onto it, we were able to rethink it and improve it. Andy and Jes contributed significantly, and it’s wonderful that it found its home.”

“My Catholicism faded away a few years back, but I still appreciate the iconography associated with the church. It resonates with me since childhood. The tale of St. Teresa is fascinating,” he added.
Jes Williams, Goodwin’s bandmate, elaborated: “Sometimes songs can feel like a Rubik’s cube. You play with it, but you need to step back and return later to truly understand what to do with it. St. Teresa kept beckoning us while recording the album, so we brought it to sessions with Dan (Austin-Sole), tweaking some parts and altering the lyrics, which turned out wonderfully.”
Upcoming Album Details
“Saint Teresa” is the third single from the Pigeons, following the previously released “Cold Dreams” and the lead single “Renegade.” All three tracks will be featured on the much-anticipated sixth studio album, “Constellations for the Lonely,” set for release on February 28 through EMI North, available for pre-order here.
This LP serves as a sequel to their 2020 album “The Universal Want,” making it the Mancunian group’s first full-length record in 11 years, following “Kingdom of Rust” in 2009.
In a previous conversation with NME, Jez discussed the themes in “Constellations for the Lonely,” stating: “It’s quite a dark album. We began writing it after canceling the Universal Want tour, and some songs reflect that experience. We aimed for Renegade to start with an apocalyptic vibe, which we felt after such a challenging time. Jimi was with us, but we navigated through the chaos, and it all came together nicely in the album.”
He continued, “Given the rather dreadful times we’re in, we wanted to mirror that reality while offering a glimmer of hope. When you listen to it, it feels like someone understands you. This is music that holds your hand through this dark world. I envision it as an album for the souls of outsiders, hoping to convey a sense of understanding.”
Additionally, in November, the group performed three intimate shows in the UK, with Goodwin absent as he continues to focus on his mental health.
