Details About The Upcoming Gunnersbury Park Show

The Libertines frontman recently chatted with NME as the final guest on In conversation and discussed the band’s highly anticipated Gunnersbury Park concert on Saturday, 9 August (click here for tickets and more information).

Bands such as Lambrini Girls, Hak Baker, and Supergrass are set to join Time For Heroes as special guests. When questioned if it felt surreal to have Gaz Coombs and his band as the opening act, Doherty responded, “Yes. Years ago, when we were young hooligans, we’d lie in Dublin Castle trying to impress girls by claiming we were going on tour with Supergrass and then try to bring them back to our basement.”

He continued, “I would go out to a phone booth and call the landline pretending to be the manager of Supergrass! It was before we even had a signed bass player or drummer. Then we supported them, and now they’re supporting us.”

Memorable Tales From The Past

Doherty also shared how his bandmate, Carl Barat, pretended to be a guitarist for Radiohead to impress some girls. “I remember Carl once strolling around the Wag Club in Soho, acting as if he were the Radiohead guitarist. I think one of the members was actually there. He was chatting with these Scandinavian girls, saying, ‘I’m the guitarist in Radiohead,’ and they responded, ‘Oh, I just met your bass player!’ He was right there!”

“We failed a number of times. ‘If you’re really in Radiohead, why are you handing out flyers for the club?’ There was always a way around it.”

Additionally, in the conversation, Doherty discussed the follow-up to their recent 2024 album, All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade, which is their first album in nearly a decade and their first chart-topping release in 20 years. He mentioned that he and Barat have more material in the works, stating that there’s a lot left to be said about their next record.

“We didn’t have much time, but during sound checks before the last tour, we came up with a few ideas,” he said. “We never just say, ‘Okay, let’s meet in the studio with a blank canvas.’ Maybe we should consider trying this. I’m a bit cautious about it. Despite my reputation for chaos, I prefer to be prepared in my own way—perhaps it’s due to my early Cub Scout training.”
