Book Overview

Set to be released on November 4, the book serves as an oral history of the iconic group formed by Paul, his wife Linda, and Denny Laine in 1971, following the immense success of The Beatles.

Described as an “inspiring, stereo celebration of songs, collaboration, and performances that shaped the late 20th-century soundtrack,” the book is based on over half a million words and numerous hours of interviews with McCartney and other key figures associated with the band.

Influence and Insights

The book delves into the band’s impact on their albums and chronicles various lineup changes throughout their journey. It features anecdotes such as their robbery in Nigeria, unexpected performances in UK university halls, and the creation of classic hits like “Let ‘Em In,” “Live and Let Die,” and “Band on the Run.”

More than 100 photographs are included in Wings: The History of the Group on the Run, many of which are previously unpublished. This book aims to illuminate the lingering effects of The Beatles’ breakup on the music scene as tastes began to diversify.

Commenting on the upcoming book, McCartney expressed: “I’m really glad to revisit the time when Wings were active and recount some of our wild adventures in this book.”

“Starting from scratch after The Beatles often felt overwhelming. There were tough moments when I questioned my decisions. But as we improved, I thought, ‘This is really good.’ We have proven that Wings can be a great band, capable of performing for a massive audience like The Beatles. It was a monumental experience.”

Wings: The History of the Group on the Run will be available for pre-order soon.

News of this book comes just weeks after the announcement of a reissue of the classic album Venus and Mars to commemorate its 50th anniversary. Initially released on March 21, this new edition of Wings’ fourth studio album from 1975 will be presented as a special half-speed master.

Both the book and the album reissue are part of a broader celebration of the group, which had a significant influence on the music scene before disbanding in 1981.

Additional releases related to the group include the theatrical release of the film One Hand Claps and its accompanying live-in-studio album from 1974, both scheduled for 2024.

Earlier this year, the group also commemorated the 50th anniversary of their third album, Band on the Run, released in 1973.

In other news, Paul McCartney recently hinted at plans to complete a new solo album this year. “I have been working on many songs, but had to put them aside due to touring,” he stated. “I aim to return and finish a lot of these songs. So, here’s my New Year’s resolution: to complete the new album!”

Meanwhile, the musician has performed three surprise intimate concerts in New York and commented that proposed changes in copyright law could hinder artists and lead to a “loss of creativity.”
