Paul McCartney Pens Letter Advocating for Joe Cocker’s Induction into the Rock Hall: ‘He Deserves to Stand Among Legends’

Paul McCartney’s Advocacy for Joe Cocker

Paul McCartney has penned a letter to promote the campaign for the late Joe Cocker’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year.

Current Nominations and Voting

Last month, this year’s nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were revealed, featuring artists such as Oasis, Joy Division/New Order, Mariah Carey, The White Stripes, and many others. Joe Cocker, the legendary singer from Sheffield and Grammy winner, is also included in this posthumous nomination.

Paul McCartney, a two-time Rock Hall inductee, is now rallying fans to vote for Cocker’s induction. In a letter dated February 25, which was shared with Diversity, McCartney expressed his endorsement, stating, “Dear rock and video fans, I would like to propose Mr. Joe Cocker for entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”

McCartney went on to state: “Joe was a remarkable artist and a phenomenal singer, whose distinct voice led to some unforgettable performances. He famously covered our song ‘With a Little Help from My Friends,’ in a version that was incredibly creative. Everyone on the committee will recognize Joe’s significant impact on the history of rock and roll.”

“Even though he may not have campaigned for induction himself, I know he would be honored and grateful to be recognized among such illustrious company. Thank you and all the best,” Paul McCartney concluded.

Voting for fans is currently open, and finalists will be announced in April. The date for the induction ceremony will be disclosed later – cast your votes here.

This year’s nominations also include Bad Company, The Black Crowes, Billy Idol, Cyndi Lauper, Outkast, Phish, Soundgarden, Chubby Checker, and Maná.

Joe Cocker passed away in late 2014 from lung cancer at the age of 70, marking this nomination his first acknowledgment by the Rock Hall.

Approximately half of the nominated artists will be inducted into the institution later this year, as determined by an international panel of 1,200 musicians, industry professionals, and historians.
