Sir Paul McCartney honored the late “beautiful, sweet” Marianne Faithfull, who passed away last night (January 30).

The passing of the iconic singer and actress was confirmed by her representatives, who stated that she “peacefully died in London” at the age of 78, “surrounded by her loving family.”

Mick Jagger conveyed a heartfelt message to his former partner, while Metallica referred to her as “fearless,” and Morrissey remarked that she “connected us all closer.” Numerous other artists and fans also paid tribute to Faithfull, the breadth of which can be explored here.

Today (January 31), the former Beatle took to his official Instagram account to post a black-and-white photograph of himself with Faithfull, writing, “What sad news that Marianne Faithfull has died.”

He continued: “She entered my life in the sixties as a beautiful, sweet 17-year-old who radiated innocent joy. For many years thereafter, I was fortunate to encounter her and become a friend for life.
